The following year, Moss again was declared the World Series of Poker Champion. It was until 1972 that Thomas “Amarillo Slim” Preston won the title. He went on the talk-show circuit. The propanganda brought about global exposures and the World Series of Poker began to gain a wider following.

It was only a year later that Binion participated in the Oral History Project at the University of Nevada-Reno and discussed the World Series of Poker with interviewer Mary Ellen Glass. “This poker game here gets us a lot of attention,” he told Glass. “We had seven players last year, and this year we had 13. I look to have better than 20 next year. It’s even liable to get up to be 50, might get up to be more than that.” Binion then paused, and as if gazing into the future, prophesied, “It will eventually.”

In the early 1980s, Binion’s dreams came true and the popularity of the World Series of Poker soared.

Notable champions from these early WSOP tournaments include Johnny Moss, Amarillo Slim, Bobby Baldwin, Doyle Brunson, and Puggy Pearson. Later in the 1970s, the first serious poker strategy books appeared, notably Super System by Doyle Brunson
and Caro’s Book of Poker Tells by Mike Caro, followed later by The Theory of Poker by David Sklansky.

By the 1980s, poker was being depicted in popular culture as a commonplace recreational activity. For example, it was featured in at least 10 episodes of Star Trek: The Next Generation as a weekly event of the senior staff of the fictional ship’s crew. In the 1990s, poker and casino gambling spread across the United States, most notably to Atlantic City, New Jersey.

Poker’s popularity experienced an unprecedented spike at the beginning of the 21st century, largely because of the introduction of online poker and hole-card cameras, which turned the game into a spectator sport. Not only could viewers now follow the action and drama of the game on television, they could also play the game in the comfort of their own home.

Following the surge in popularity, new poker tours soon emerged, notably the World Poker Tour and European Poker Tour, both televised and the latter sponsored by online poker company PokerStars. Subsequent tours have since been created by PokerStars, such as Latin American Poker Tour and Asia Pacific Poker Tour, as well as other national tours.

In 2009, the International Federation of Poker was founded in Lausanne, Switzerland, becoming the official governing body for poker and promoting the game as a Mind Sport. In 2011 it announced plans for two new events. The Nations Cup, a duplicate poker team event, to be staged on the London Eye on the banks of the River Thames, and “The Table”, the invitation only IFP World Championship, featuring roughly 130 of the world’s best poker players, in an event to find the 2011 official “World Champion.

There are so many poker variants. There are also variations within the poker variants. It is generally known that the way different communities play poker also differ slightly even within the same poker variant as long as the participating players agreed to their own rules.

This can become quite confusing when the public and strangers play among themselves. Serious dispute can arise.

To solve this problem, most casinos, clubs and organizations have agreed to accept the rules laid down by the well known World Series of Poker. It is well acepted that the committee of World Series of Poker is the authority in poker rules.

The World Series of Poker rules for the five poker variants are as follows:

1. Texas Hold ’em

Each player is first dealt two cards face down.
A round of betting occurs as players decide for the first time if they are in or they are out.

Then five community cards follow with betting after the flop (three community cards face up), the turn (four community cards face up), and the river (five community cards face up).
In the end, the best five card combination wins the hand and takes the pot.

2. Omaha

Instead of being dealt two cards, each player receives four down cards. A round of betting occurs as players decide for the first time if they are in or they are out (fold).

Then five community cards follow with betting after the flop, the turn, and the river. Those still in reveal their cards. However, the rules in Omaha is different. A player must use two and only two of their down cards along with three of the community cards. The best five card hand wins the pot.

3. Seven card stud

Each player is dealt three cards. The first two are face down and the third is face up for everyone to see. Players must then decide for the first time whether they are in, or out.

The next three cards are all dealt face up, with more rounds of betting after each card. The seventh and final card is dealt face down. After one last round of betting, players still in will reveal what they have. As always, the best five card hand wins the hand and takes the pot.

4. Razz

This game is a lot like seven card stud except of course the low hand wins. To begin, three cards are dealt to each player.
The first two are face down cards the third is face up for everyone to see.

A round of betting follows, as it does after each of the next three face up cards are dealt. The seventh and last card is dealt face down.

One more round of betting before players still in the game will reveal what they have. Now remember the low hand is the winner and flushes and straights do not count as high hands so ace to five is a good as its face value.

5. Lowball

Basically, its five card draw and the low hand wins.
The point of the game is to have the lowest hand possible.
But unlike razz, straights and flushes count as high hands.

So the best possible hand a player could have is 2, 3, 4, 5, and 7. Each player receives five cards face down. After a round of betting a player is allowed to draw up to five new cards.

Once a player receives their new cards, a final round of betting follows. Players then reveal their cards and since the lowest hand is the best – 2,3,4,5 and 7 off suit is the best hand for Lowball.

So, now you know the five poker variants recognized by WSOP, the World Series of Poker.

Expectation and Hourly Earnings

I have discussed Mathematical Expectation in one of my earlier posts. Mathematical expectation is the difference in wagers after taken into consideration the average amount in winning or losing bets. It is an extremely important concept for the gambler because it shows him how to evaluate most gambling situations. Using mathematical expectation is also the best way to analyze most professional plays, including tie bets in baccarat, counting cards in blackjack and poker.

Mathematical expectation has nothing to do with results. It makes no difference whether you win or lose a specific bet or series of bets as long as you have a bankroll to cover your losses. If you continue to make these bets, you will win, and in the long run your win will approach specifically the sum of your expectations.

Anytime you make a bet with the best of it, where the odds are in your favour, you have earned something on that bet, whether you actually win or lose the bet. By the same token, when you make a bet with the worst of it, where the odds are not in your favour, you have lost something, whether you actually win or lose the bet. You have the best of it when you have a positive expectation, and you have a positive expectation when the odds are in your favour. You have the worst of it when you have a negative expectation, and you have a negative expectation when the odds are against you. Serious gamblers bet only when they have the best of it; when they have the worst of it, they sit out.

What does it mean to have the odds in your favour? It means winning more on a result than the true odds warrant.

Mathematical expectation is at the heart of every gambling situation.

Your hourly earnings or hourly rate is closely related to expectation, and it is a concept especially important to the professional player. If you play professionally, you should try to assess what you think you can earn per hour. For the most part you will have to base your assessment on your judgement and experience, but you can use certain mathematical guidelines.

Of course, in most games you can’t be precise. Many variables would affect your hourly rate. Furthermore, if you are playing in a public card room or in some private games where the operator takes away commissions, you need to deduct either the house rake or the hourly seat charge. In Las Vegas poker rooms the rake is usually 10 percent of each pot up to a maximum of $4 in the smaller seven-card stud games and 5 percent of each pot
to a maximum of $3 in the larger seven-card stud games, in the Texas hold ’em games, and in most other games. In baccarat, the commissions is 5% on banker won bets.

In the long run a player’s overall win is the sum of his mathematical expectations in individual situations. The more plays you make with a positive expectation, the more money you will make. The more plays you make with a negative expectation, the bigger loser you stand to be. Therefore, you should almost always try to make the play that will maximize your positive expectation or minimize your negative expectation in order to maximize your hourly rate. Once you have decided what your hourly rate is, you should realize that what you are doing is earning.

You are no longer gambling. You should no longer be anxious to have a good day or upset when you have a bad day. If you play regularly, you should simply feel that it is better to be playing making $50 an hour, able to come and go as you please, than to be working an eight-hour shift making $40 an hour.

To think of professional gambling as something glamorous is very bad. You must think that you are just working as a professional player and that you are not particularly anxious about making a big score, If it comes, it comes.

Conversely, you won’t be so upset if you have a big loss. If one comes, it comes. If you are hit, you are hit. You are just playing for a certain hourly rate.

If you have estimated your hourly rate correctly, your eventual winnings will approximate your projected hourly rate multiplied by the total hours played. Your edge comes not from lady luck, system or money management, but from exploiting situations where you have the advantage. The actual advantage would depend on what game you play.

To assume you play perfectly is, of course, a big assumption. Few if any of us play perfectly all of the time, but that is what we strive for.
